• I’m not an artist, but for an artist’s take on these devices, I always check Brad Colbow’s YouTube channel. He has years’ worth of videos on Surface Pro, iPad, and other pencil-compatible devices, and I trust what he has to say about each tablet’s utility for people who do lots of drawing and inking with their tablets. But the Surface Pro 7 does little to move the needle. • Unless you’re editing videos, you probably don’t need to store numerous huge files on internal storage. So going with small internal storage together with Microsoft OneDrive is a good plan too. • In our battery test, which consists of cycling through a variety of websites in Google Chrome with the display set as close to 200 nits as possible until the battery ran out, the Surface Pro 8 also fell below the 16-hour mark. Without Microsoft’s Battery Saver feature enabled, which dims the display and kills some background processes, we were able to get a little over six hours of battery life. • Pulling the screen forward is a bit awkward — you have to reach up and bend the top half backward until the magnets holding the bottom half in place release, and then you can bring it closer to you. The Laptop Studio starts at $1,599.99 for a basic model — equip it with a faster processor; more RAM and storage; and a discrete GPU, and you’ll easily add a thousand dollars to that number. • For some reason, the Adobe Creative Cloud app uses too much RAM and processing power and always causes the fans to spin, and drains battery fast. So don’t have Adobe Creative Cloud launch at login, and (it’s a hassle) always quit that app when you’re not using it.
