• One of the best mediums for pop art drawing is marker pens, like Copic Markers. These pens offer fantastic blendability and are highly pigmented, so the results appear bright on the paper. • Cubism is an avant-garde style of art that took Expressionism even further, intentionally fragmenting subjects into geometric forms and reorienting them to be viewed at multiple angles simultaneously. Such abstractions often made the work unrecognizable without first reading the title of the piece. • Academic drawing styles often relate to mastery of technical art skills and sharp observation of life and the physical properties of the material world. • One of the more common forms of art is a pencil sketch. All you need is a set of good-quality pencils to begin creating some highly defined artwork. • Velvet painting is done on black velvet and first began in Kashmir. The original artworks generally depicted religious portraits, mainly in the Caucasus region, and were usually done by Russian orthodox priests. This method of painting was then introduced to Western Europe and some pieces can still be found in the Vatican Museum. As far as historians and archaeologists can tell, human beings have been painting for just as long as we have existed. • The comic book drawing style has its own set of rules and conventions that have been established over the years. • In this room we also see a work which resembles a jungle. It is an artwork by Henri Rousseau, The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope (1905). This piece takes from post-impressionist Paul Gauguin’s work, as it looks for environments which haven’t been touched by the Western art tradition. The idea of ‘primitive’ refers to this and can also be seen as racist because of how European artists sought other cultures, taking from their artworks to develop their own practices. Body painting is only temporary, unlike a tattoo, and can be used on the entire body or only on sections of the body, for example, face painting. • The Art Deco movement was a style of design that was popular during the 1920s to the 1930s. • Abstract Expressionism is the term used to describe a new form of modern painting that emerged in the mid 20th century, primarily in the US. Much like its 19th-century precursor ‘Expressionism,’ the abstracted forms are expressive of the artist’s ideas or emotions. Artists such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock worked in a spontaneous way, far removed from the linear and exacting methods of old masters. Though art history is quick to paint a very masculine picture of the genre, some incredible female artists from this period are now getting more recognition, such as Alma Thomas, Grace Hartigan, and Joan Mitchell. • Impasto painting or texture painting itself involves using undiluted and thick paint that once applied, leaves an almost three-dimensional effect on the canvas. The brush strokes are usually visible; however, the artist also uses a palette knife or sometimes their fingers to apply the paint. When you look at an impasto painting from the side, you will notice the paint sticking up from the surface. Neo Expressionism is defined by subjectivity and relates to the minimalist movement that came about in the 1970s. • The term Rococo comes from the French word rocaille, which means ‘rock crystal’. Rococo art has a distinctive style and was popular in Europe during the 18th century. • This is a painting method that dates as far back as Ancient Egypt and is also known as wax art. The pigment is taken and added to hot beeswax, which then forms a type of paste that is applied to wood or canvas. The artists then use special tools to shape the wax before it cools. Today, many artists make use of heat guns to extend the cooling or drying time of the wax so they can work longer.
